Coolit v. 5.00 - no more guessing and compact models

Just released, Coolit version 5.00 incorporates embedded mesh technology. This pioneering technology eliminates dependence on approximate methods such as resistor networks and lumped parameter (compact) models. It simplifies model building, while increasing the model fidelity and accuracy and delivering significant increases in solution speed. You can now model the entire system directly, without resorting to simplifications of compact models. Some examples: a system board with over ten heat sinks with fins as thin as 0.008" (0.2 mm) and a 19 inch wide, 2U telecom chassis with two main PC boards, 3 stackable cards and a power supply cooled by three fans. The first case was solved in just a few hours. In the second case, solved overnight, the thermal model included several pin fin heat sinks and PBGAs down to the die level and the actual solder balls: 324 per PBGA! The TO263 power diodes, including their heat sinks, were also modeled in complete detail.

Coolit goes to work on space telescope

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) recently selected Coolit for thermal analysis of a space telescope design. SLAC needed a fast and accurate analysis of their electronics cooling design for the proposed Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope. Using Coolit, engineers were able to build and analyze 12 electronics modules on a tight schedule.

Coolit Tips

Seeing through streamlines

In complex flows, tracking the flow with streamlines can result in quite a tangle. CoolPlot now provides the option of changing the transparency of streamlines, ribbons, and rods so you can see through them. In the Streamline Properties dialog, Visualization page, adjust the opacity with the slider and press the Apply button to view the effect of new settings before closing the dialog.

Speeding up particles

If you would like to speed up your streamline animations, go to Streamline Properties| Animation Settings and uncheck the Auto box next to "Animation Duration”. Enter a lower number in the field to make the particles fly faster.

New Features

Moviemaking in CoolPlot

You can now create .AVI animation files for streamlines, ribbons, and rods as well as for time-dependent simulations. Use the new File|Export function or click  to record a movie.

CAD software-independent file import

Coolit can now import STL files. STL offers the best compromise between portability and accuracy. First, any 3D CAD software can export STL files. Furthermore, exporting in other popular formats, such as IGES or STEP, results in conversion problems due to the format complexity and inconsistency. STL virtually guarantees smooth conversions. Check out these examples of a MOSFET design and a custom extruded heat sink shown first in CAD and then in Coolit.
